This day in Buffalo History

On January 6, 1822, future Buffalo mayor Solomon Scheu was born near Standenbehl in Bavaria. He made the trip to America in 1839 and found a brother and uncle living in Buffalo. He worked as a baker eventually opening his own bakery. He sold that and went into the grocery business, then opened a saloon which led him into politics. He served as an alderman and in 1877 was elected mayor of Buffalo.
